‘We are on the threshold of the age of disinformation‘.

The spread of false information on the internet is dividing the world like never before - and it is closely linked to the development of AI technologies. AI is both a curse and a blessing: it can generate and amplify false information, but it can also help to detect it. How can we succeed in utilising the strengths of AI and at the same time make society aware of the risks?

‘Education, not regulation,‘ answers Bellingcats founder Eliot Higgins. With his international research collective, Higgins has significantly influenced the field of open source online research and thus also today's journalism.
In the session at the Annual Meeting, Higgins will show the impact of disinformation on security and democracy and what we need to do today to ensure that a strong Europe is a resilient Europe, supported by a better-informed and united society.

The British blogger and journalist became known for his work in 2012, when he was the first to expose the use of cluster bombs and barrel bombs in Syria and analysed the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine. Since its founding in 2014, Higgins has led Bellingcat to become a Netherlands-based NGO with a global team of 40 employees and numerous volunteers pioneering work in various fields from journalism to justice.
