Focus on Speaker David Goodhart

How political divides are created and how they can be overcome

In various regions around the globe, there is a growing divide between cities and provinces. On one hand, there are the winners - those places that are thriving economically, have a dynamic population, and offer promising prospects for the future. On the other side are the less fortunate places, struggling with higher unemployment rates as well as social exclusion. This divide has profound implications for politics and society. In David Goodhart’s book The Road to Somewhere: The Populist Revolt and the Future of Politics (2017), he examined the rise of populist movements in many Western countries. In it, he outlined the concept of two social groups: One group, the Somewheres, opposed to them are the Anywheres, the Everywhere-people.

In order to find ways to prevent societies from drifting apart, Goodhart's concept can be a guidance. Discover in the session on 23 November 2023 what the path to this might look like.
