Max Schrems

Jurist, Autor und Datenschutzaktivist,

Maximilian Schrems ist ein österreichischer Jurist, Autor und Datenschutzaktivist. Er konnte mit seiner Klage vor dem Europäischen Gerichtshof (EuGH) das transnationale Safe-Harbor-Abkommen zwischen der EU und den USA und den EU-US Privacy Shield beenden, was als starkes Signal für den Grundrechtsschutz in Europa angesehen wird.

Er ist Vorstandsvorsitzender der Initiative NOYB, die sich der Durchsetzung von Datenschutzrechten verschrieben hat.

Maximilian wuchs in Salzburg auf und besuchte dort das Bundesrealgymnasium, bevor er sich 2007 dazu entschied, nach Wien zu ziehen und dort ein Studium der Rechtswissenschaften aufzunehmen. Fünf Jahre später schloss er dieses erfolgreich ab. Während seines Studiums spezialisierte er sich auf IT-Recht und den Datenschutz. Im Jahr 2011 veröffentlichte er eine Monografie über die rechtliche Lage der Videoüberwachung in Österreich. Im Zuge seines Auslandssemesters an der Santa Clara University in Kalifornien, traf er auf Vertreter des US-Konzerns Meta Platforms (vormals Facebook Inc.), was zur Beschäftigung mit Facebook führte.

Maximilian Schrems is an Austrian lawyer, author, and privacy activist. He was able to end the transnational Safe Harbor agreement between the EU and the US and the EU-US Privacy Shield with his lawsuit before the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which is seen as a strong signal for fundamental rights protection in Europe.

He is chairman of the board of the NOYB initiative, which is dedicated to the enforcement of data protection rights.

Maximilian grew up in Salzburg and attended the Bundesrealgymnasium there before deciding to move to Vienna in 2007 to study law. Five years later, he successfully graduated. During his studies, he specialized in IT law and data protection. In 2011, he published a monograph on the legal situation of video surveillance in Austria. In the course of his semester abroad at Santa Clara University in California, he met representatives of the US corporation Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook Inc.), which led to his involvement with Facebook.
